All things Jess
I’m 23 and I know I’m not alone in saying that I wish Taylor Swift’s song, “22″ would have come out a year ago. I do sing it (loudly) like I’m still 22, though. I am about done with a Masters Degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma, don’t ask what I’m going to do next because I have no clue. Maybe another degree?
I get way too involved with television shows, books, and movies. It’s only unhealthy if I can’t see the problem….right? I like to run and practice yoga. This year I cooked (from scratch) the sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, stuffing, and pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. I didn’t give anyone food poisoning so I now have a newfound love of cooking. I’m excited to be trying a whole slew of new recipes during this time of training.
When did you start running?
To be perfectly honest, I can’t remember when I started to run. I do remember having to run a mile in Elementary school and I felt like dying. I didn’t really try again until college. I guess within the past year I have become a more serious runner. I just want to keep improving!
Will the Austin Half be your first?
As a matter of fact, yes! I am very excited/nervous/tad overwhelmed. 13 miles is a lot.
What training program are you following?
I am going to follow the Hal Higdon Novice 1 Half Marathon training plan that I printed off the Internet. I wrote it all in my planner already–in pink pen, mind you– so this is like a done deal.
What do you listen to while you run?
Usually whatever I’m in the mood for. I fancy myself as having a very eclectic taste in music. You can always find Pat Green, Passion Pit, Mumford and Sons, and Taylor Swift on any of my playlists-running or otherwise. I’ll keep you posted on my running playlist of the week.
What is your running diet?
I’ve never done this before so it is going to kind of be a trial and error thing as to what I like to eat and what fuels my body the best. I do know that I will be limiting my caffeine and sugar intake. Also, no fast food. This will be great for my bank account! I will be trying a couple of new recipes each week that I will share on my Tuesday posts. I will also cut out alcohol….sadly. But a glass (or two) of wine won’t kill me right? Or how about a Blue Moon every once in a while? No? This may be tough.
What kind of cross-training will you be doing?
I will be cycling or doing Zumba on the actual cross-training days. However, I’ll also be doing my normal at home yoga routine before bed.
What are you passionate about?
First and foremost, I love God, my family, and my friends. I love seeing God work in all our lives. I am passionate about the work of Make-A-Wish, specifically the Oklahoma chapter. I have volunteered as a big sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters for the last year and have learned so much. Ask me about my experience sometime, I have great stories.
What else is going on in your life?
I spend at least one day a week back home on the farm with my family. That usually consists of a lot of naps and “helping” dad feed the cows. Oh, and really good home cooked meals via mom. I am also getting into photography, nothing serious, but I enjoy learning new tricks and practicing them!
What is your running motivation?
It’s simple. I tell myself over and over (and over) that there’s someone else out there who is in worse shape and working harder. That seems to do the trick.
